South West Engineering Market Insights Report

Alice Walker-Savings

This report combines Rise Technical's own vacancy data from the last six months (April –October 2026) with wider market data from public sources. It looks at where South West manufacturing engineering demand is concentrated, which roles employers are hiring for, and what that means for pay, skills and hiring. It also answers the questions employers and candidates ask most often, so you can see how our live data compares with the wider picture.

Titles are highly fragmented: no single title accounts for more than 5% of demand. Clients describe similar roles in very different ways, so candidates searching for one title will miss many relevant jobs.

That means advertising a role and waiting rarely reaches the right people. A CNC Miller / Turner, a Mazak Programmer and a CNC Setter-Operator may have near-identical skills, but they search and apply under different titles. Many of the best engineers aren't searching at all.

Rise works from skills, not job titles. We speak to engineers every day, so we know which titles really mean the same job, and we approach passive candidates directly. You reach the people a job board never shows you.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the most manufacturing engineering jobs in the South West?

Devon and Gloucestershire. Between April and October 2026, they accounted for 48.3% of the South West manufacturing engineering vacancies Rise Technical handled: Devon 24.3% and Gloucestershire 24.0%. Somerset was third with 14.0%. The key hubs are Exeter, Plymouth, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury, Poole and Bridgwater.

What engineering jobs are in demand in the South West?

CNC and machining roles are in highest demand, followed by quality and inspection, production and NPI, field service, and maintenance engineers. The most common single job title is Maintenance Engineer. Controls, PLC and robotics engineers are fewer in number but among the hardest roles to fill.

How much does an engineer earn in the South West?

Advertised salaries in our 2026 South West data run from about £35,000 for production engineers to £50,000 for manufacturing and quality systems engineers. Shift maintenance engineers reach £54,000, and controls and robotics engineers reach £80,000. Shift allowances can add significantly to base pay.

Are controls and automation engineers hard to find in the South West?

Yes, but they typically involve longer searches and higher salaries, up to £80,000 near Cheltenham. The scarcity reflects how few candidates combine PLC, robotics and manufacturing experience.

When is the best time to look for a manufacturing job in the South West?

Late spring and summer. May to July 2026 produced 61% of six-month demand, with CNC peaking in June and maintenance in July. Hiring stayed steady at about 20 roles a month through August and September.

Is the South West a good place for a CNC machinist career?

Yes. CNC, machining and toolmaking is the largest role family in our South West data. Demand is clustered around Poole, Wimborne and Ferndown in Dorset, and the Gloucestershire corridor from Tewkesbury to Stroud.

Why do manufacturers use a recruitment partner for repeat hiring?

In the South West, 70% of manufacturing vacancies come from companies hiring multiple roles within six months. For these employers, a dedicated recruitment partner or RPO model reduces time-to-hire, keeps employer branding consistent and builds a pipeline of shift, CNC and maintenance talent ahead of demand.

Which job titles should I search for in South West manufacturing?

Search more than one title. The same role appears under many names: Maintenance Engineer, Multi-skilled Engineer and Shift Engineer, or CNC Miller, CNC Turner, CNC Programmer and CNC Operator. No single title accounts for more than 5% of vacancies.
